International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee Meetings in Salt Lake City Games

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah— The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games will conduct a three-day session March 5-7 with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) for a progress report, working group meetings and plenary commission meetings. Also in Salt Lake City the week of March 5, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Executive Board will meet to discuss internal Paralympics management issues.

The IOC visit will be the 7th meeting with SLOC in Salt Lake City, the final meeting will held in October 2001, prior to the 2002 Games. The IOC Coordination Commission is comprised of representatives from the IOC, National Olympic Committees, International Sport Federations, past Organizing Committees and specialists, and is here to monitor SLOC’s progress and preparations for the Winter Games of 2002.

The IPC Executive Committee meeting, a regularly scheduled bi-annual board meeting, will discuss matters and issues related to the management of the IPC. The IPC Games Liasion Committee, a body similar in scope to the IOC Coordination Commission, will meet in Salt Lake City in August 2001, and the next session of the IPC Executive Committee will take place in Salt Lake just prior to the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games.

“We have made excellent progress to date,” said Mitt Romney, SLOC President and CEO. “These meetings are a great indicator that SLOC has assembled a knowledgeable team able to accomplish the goals which the IOC and IPC have set for 2002.”
